For the 76th Annual Tony Awards on Sunday, June 11, in New York City, Lupita Nyong’o wore a striking breastplate molded from her own body. It’s like the female version of George Clooney’s Batman & Robin bat suit (which is a compliment, by the way).
The Oscar-winning actor wore the sleeveless silver breastplate with a black tuxedo jacket and black high-waist, wide-leg trousers. The bespoke backless breastplate, by Misha Japanwala, a Pakistani artist and fashion designer, is attached to Nyong’o’s body by a single chain that fastens at the back of her neck. The 40-year-old accessorized with silver jewelry, a black and silver clutch, and a chrome manicure, as well as shimmery eye shadow, which she paired with a glossy berry lip. A graphic tattoo-like design adorned her head.

Japanwala’s work “is rooted in the rejection and deconstruction of external shame attached to one’s body,” Nyong’o wrote in the caption, referring to the work as a “Shameless Out-of-Body Experience.”
“In her artistic process, she creates a realistic and true record of a person’s body as an act of resistance and celebration, and an insistence on being allowed to exist freely in our bodies,” Nyong’o added.
Breastplates, once worn as a piece of armor to protect the chest, are on the rise in the realm of high fashion. In addition to Nyong’o, other stars who have worn a breastplate in the 2020s include Olivia Wilde, Sydney Sweeney, and Zendaya. Maybe breastplates are about to become the new sheer?
