A massive cargo ship carrying clothing from Asia got stuck in dense fog off the coast of France on Tuesday, as the country cracks down on fast-fashion waste. The CMA CGM Centaurus, one of the world’s largest container ships, was waiting to enter the port of Le Havre when it was enveloped in fog, according to local media reports. The ship was carrying thousands of containers of clothing, shoes, and other goods, mostly from China and Bangladesh, destined for distribution centers across Europe. The delay is expected to cause disruptions to the supply chain and could result in shortages of certain items in stores. France is one of the leading consumers of fast fashion in Europe, with the average French person buying around 60 new clothing items each year and discarding about 12 kilograms (26 pounds) of textiles annually. In an effort to reduce waste, the French government has introduced a new law that requires clothing brands to display labels indicating how their products are made and how they should be disposed of. The law also bans the destruction of unsold clothing and requires brands to take back old clothes from customers for recycling. The CMA CGM Centaurus is expected to be able to enter the port of Le Havre once the fog lifts. However, the delay is a reminder of the environmental challenges posed by the global shipping industry and the need to reduce waste associated with fast fashion..
