Olivia Wilde has shown she’s not afraid to take a risk on the red carpet, from hoods to grown-up crop tops. Now, the Don’t Worry Darling director has dabbled in another out-there trend: the high-fashion breastplate.
For the Women Talking premiere in LA, Wilde opted for a black dress featuring a gold breastplate made from moulded leather—look 1 from Gabriela Hearst’s spring-summer 2023 collection. A symbol of female empowerment, it was a fitting choice for Wilde, who has been outspoken on the subject of gender inequality in the film industry.
Of course, Wilde is not the only star to have sported a breastplate on the red carpet. Back in January 2020, Zendaya famously wore a sculpted hot-pink breastplate by Tom Ford at the Critics’ Choice Awards, later revealing to British how the designer’s team came over to her house and “scanned my boobs” in order to create the jaw-dropping look. The following year, the actor also sported Loewe’s gold breastplate dress from spring-summer 2023 for the Women in Film Awards (again, an apt choice) in LA.
With Z’s fellow Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney also choosing to wear a chrome breastplate by LaQuan Smith at GQ’s Men of the Year Awards in London this week, don’t expect this trend to go away anytime soon as we head into awards season.
