There is no phoning it in when it comes to dressing for the Met Gala, and Anne Hathaway, who always understands the assignment, had a major fashion moment on the carpet.
The Oscar winner channeled ’90s supermodels at the 2023 Met Gala on Monday, May 1 in a strapless custom Atelier Versace gown that blended Chanel design signatures like white tweed and pearl detailing with iconic Versace touches like the gold safety pins holding the bodice together. Hathaway finished the bombshell look with a matching set of gloves, glittering choker necklace, and beehive half updo.
The theme of the 2023 Met Gala is “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” in celebration of the late designer’s contributions to fashion, according to Vogue, and the dress code is “in honor of Karl.” Perhaps most famous for his work as the creative director of Chanel, Lagerfeld also designed for Patou, Balmain, Chloé, Fendi, as well as his own brand—giving attendees a wide range of sources of inspiration for their looks.
Of course, no one would expect Hathaway to show up wearing any designer other than Versace, having just been hand-picked by Donatella Versace herself to be the face of the Versace Icons collection. “[Anne Hathaway] loves and understands great clothes,” Donatella told Vogue. The designer added that she has, “long admired Anne because she is an extraordinary artist with a strong point of view about her career. She also uses her platform for good as a UN goodwill ambassador. She is a woman after my own heart.”
