Feeling blue? Here’s something that might cheer you up: Kim Kardashian committed one of the greatest fashion faux pas of all time, the kind you thought happened only to Elle Woods in Legally Blonde. Kim K, all decked out for Halloween as Mystique from X-Men (a.k.a. the shape-shifting character played by both Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Lawrence) attended Tracee Ellis Ross’s 50th-birthday party, which she quickly learned was not a costume party, but a normal party.
For her Mystique costume, Kim K was covered in blue latex from neck to toe. Her face was covered in blue paint, and she wore a red wig and yellow contacts. But Kim didn’t go solo. The Skims founder formed a group of X-Women (sorry) alongside friends Olivia Pierson as Magik and Natalie Halcro as Selene.
Here’s the costume:

Unfortunately, Kim’s night didn’t go exactly as planned. She attended the 50th-birthday dinner for actor Tracee Ellis Ross, only to discover that the event was not a costume party. Kardashian could have, and probably should have, double-checked the occasion’s dress code, but maybe she assumed all celebs would be in costume. Or maybe she did it on purpose. After all, she has to have content for her grid.
Kim shared the faux pas in her Instagram Stories, posting a selfie with the birthday queen. “That time I showed up to a birthday dinner in full costume when it wasn’t a costume party,” she wrote in the story. “Happy Birthday to the most beautiful soul @traceeelliseross.”
Ross, a good sport, posted Kim Kardashian’s IG story on her own. For her birthday outfit, the actor, known for her bold fashion, wore a sparkly red ensemble that was most definitely not a Halloween costume. Thankfully, Kardashian later shared snaps of herself with Diddy, dressed as The Joker (original!), at an event a little more suited for her elaborate costume. So not a complete waste of paint.
